Solar panel installation on a home near Royston

Royston based · MCS certified · Cert. NAP-32603

Designed for your house. Generating in weeks.

We're based three miles from Royston and work across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Bedfordshire. We survey the roof ourselves and size the system to how you actually use electricity, not to a package off a price list. Most customers are generating within a month of the first visit.

How we work

Small enough that the same people do the whole job.

Dan and his team handle the survey, the design, the electrical work and the commissioning. Nobody hands you over on install day and nothing gets subcontracted out, which is why the system you end up with is the one that was designed for your roof rather than the one that suited somebody's schedule.

It also means the answers come from the people who'll be doing the work. Royston Solar Solutions started life as an electrical contracting business and in a real sense still is one, so the consumer unit changes, the DNO notification and the commissioning are handled in-house.

  • Survey and quote from the people who'll carry out the installation
  • Sized to your electricity use, not to the area of your roof
  • Fuse board upgrades and DNO applications handled in-house
  • MCS certification means you qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee

Why local matters here

Close enough to come back.

We're in Meldreth, three miles outside Royston, and almost every system we fit is within about half an hour of it. That matters less on install day than it does afterwards. If something needs checking, adjusting or explaining again in eighteen months, we're a short drive away rather than a support ticket.

Working the same patch year after year also means we already know what catches people out around here.

  • Conservation and Heritage Area properties in Letchworth, Saffron Walden and the surrounding villages
  • Older wiring in period village houses around Meldreth, Melbourn and Barrington
  • The UK Power Networks G98 and G99 process for getting a system approved and connected
  • Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Bedfordshire, all covered from one base

Two things we get asked for a lot

The jobs other installers turn down

Being an electrical contractor first, and local, means we take on work that a volume solar operation would rather not quote.

Off-grid solar and battery installation

Off-grid systems

Barn conversions, outbuildings and remote builds where a new grid connection would cost a fortune. Designed around a still, overcast week in February rather than a sunny afternoon in June, because that's the week that decides whether it works.

Solar installation in a conservation area

Conservation & heritage areas

“We're in a conservation area, so we can't have solar” is the most common misconception we hear, and it's usually wrong. We recently completed an installation inside Letchworth's Heritage Area, designed to sit sympathetically with the character of the property.

How we approach it

Recent work

Real roofs, real installs

Every photo here is a system we designed and fitted ourselves. No stock imagery.

How it works

Four steps, no surprises

From first phone call to a commissioned system is typically four to eight weeks, with only one or two of those days spent on your roof.

Site survey

We look at the roof, the fuse board and a year of your electricity bills, then tell you honestly what the roof can do.

Written quote

A fixed price with the actual panel, inverter and battery models named. No finance pitch, no expiring discount.

Paperwork

We handle the DNO application (G98/G99) and the MCS certification so your Smart Export Guarantee application goes through cleanly.

Install & commission

One to two days on site, scaffolding cleared, system tested and handed over with the app set up and explained.

Every one of them five stars. These are their words, not our summary of them.

★★★★★
Dan and colleagues installed an EV charger at our property this week and we are really pleased. From start to finish, great communication, very responsive, and we’re very happy with the result!

Sue SGoogle review · August 2026

★★★★★
He clearly knows his stuff – he took the time to understand exactly what we wanted to achieve and customised the build accordingly rather than pushing a off-the-shelf solution.

★★★★★
He came out the same day to give us a quote, and within three weeks the system has been fitted and we’re generating electricity!

Worth knowing

0% VAT on domestic solar ends 31 March 2027

Solar panels, battery storage and the installation itself currently carry no VAT on residential properties. That relief is legislated to end on 31 March 2027, after which the rate is expected to return to 5%. On a typical 4kWp system that's somewhere in the region of £1,000 to £1,400.

It's a real deadline rather than a sales tactic, but it's still well over a year away, so there's no need to rush a decision.
